Used batteries and recycling

A used lead-acid battery is hazardous waste, but almost all of its material can be recovered. Here is what we ask you to do with an old battery and what we do with it.

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Why recycling matters

A car battery holds lead and sulphuric acid. Thrown away or broken open, it can poison soil and water. Lead-acid batteries are among the most recycled products in the world, because the lead and plastic can be recovered and used again.

Returning your old battery

  • When we fit a new battery in Nairobi, we take the old one away with us.
  • You can also bring a used battery to our shop on Lusaka Road.
  • Where a return credit applies to your purchase, it is shown at checkout or on your quotation. The amount depends on the brand.

Please do not sell or give old batteries to unlicensed buyers, and do not burn or open them.

Handling at the shop

Used batteries are kept upright and dry, away from drains, until they are collected. We keep the electrolyte inside the battery and clean up any spill straight away.

We do not process batteries ourselves. We pass them to a recycler. Ask us if you want to know who collects them.

Choosing the right battery

A correctly sized battery of the right type lasts longer and is replaced less often, which means less waste. Our battery care tips explain how to get more years from yours.

We are an authorised dealer for Varta and Amaron batteries in Kenya. We deliver free across Kenya, and in Nairobi we fit the battery at your car, usually the same day for orders placed before 3:00 PM. Where a car needs the new battery registered after fitting, we do that too.
