AGM vs. EFB: Which Battery Does Your Start-Stop Car Need?
Modern vehicles with Start-Stop systems place enormous demands on their batteries. To meet these needs, two advanced battery technologies have emerged: Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB). Understanding their differences is key to ensuring your vehicle performs optimally.
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Batteries
AGM batteries are the highest-performance lead-acid batteries available. In an AGM battery, the electrolyte is absorbed into special glass mat separators, making it spill-proof and highly resistant to vibration. They are designed for:
- Advanced Start-Stop systems, especially those with regenerative braking.
- High-end luxury cars with heavy electrical loads (e.g., heated seats, large infotainment screens, multiple electronic control units).
- Vehicles where the battery is located in the cabin or boot, as they emit no gas during normal operation.
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery)
EFB batteries are a robust evolution of standard "wet" flooded batteries. They include a special poly-fleece "scrim" on the surface of the positive plates, which improves their lifespan and ability to handle deep discharges. They are designed for:
- Entry-level Start-Stop systems.
- Vehicles without Start-Stop but with higher-than-normal power demands (e.g., delivery vans, taxis).
- A high-performance, cost-effective upgrade over a conventional battery.

The Golden Rule: Never Downgrade
The most important rule when replacing a battery in a Start-Stop vehicle is to replace like-for-like or upgrade.
- If your car came with an AGM battery, you must replace it with another AGM. Downgrading will cause system malfunctions and rapid battery failure.
- If your car came with an EFB battery, you must replace it with at least another EFB. You can, however, choose to upgrade to an AGM for even better performance and longevity.
