Smart Alternators: The 14.8V Logic Explained

July 28, 2026By VARTA German Battery Hub

Modern "Smart Alternators" do not charge at a fixed voltage. They utilize variable regulation to reduce engine load and CO2 emissions. During deceleration, the voltage may spike to 14.8V (Regenerative Charging), which standard batteries cannot handle without "gassing."

Technical Insight

AGM batteries are specifically designed to absorb high-current surges from smart alternators, converting that energy into stored power without overheating.
